Rhod Gilbert finds out what it’s like to be a care worker

As the dedication of care workers comes to the fore during the coronavirus pandemic, BBC Wales has aired a special Rhod Gilbert’s Work Experience episode about working in care.

Rhod Gilbert said: ‘I have been wanting to film a Work Experience episode as a carer for years – and before the COVID-19 outbreak, our little team made it happen.

‘It was very emotional when we filmed it. Not least because my dad is in a fantastic care home, and my mother died of Alzheimer’s a few years ago.

‘During filming, I was privileged enough to spend a few days helping the staff at a home in Barry, South Wales. When we filmed it last year, I felt that carers were one of the least valued and most valuable members of our society; that is no longer in question.’

The episode sees Rhod embark on an emotional journey as he discovers how the work of carers is so important. From spending a day in training, a few days in a care home and a day out in the community, Rhod finds that the key is getting to know the people he’s caring for.

You can watch the episode on BBC iPlayer.
