Sophie's Childminding Service
I’m Sophie, also known as ‘Little Learners Childcare’, based in rural West Wales. I care for children in my home, offering childcare inspired by Reggio, Steiner and Montessori approaches. My background includes a BA honours degree and a Master’s in Early Years Education and Infant/Child Psychology. I’ve always been fascinated by how children think, learn and experience the world.
I wanted a career that felt meaningful and made a difference. Childminding has allowed me to be my own boss and create a setting I’m proud of.
How I got here
After leaving school, I studied for my degrees while working in nurseries as a nanny, and as a childminder. I also spent two years overseas as an Au Pair. Over a decade working in childcare, studying and travelling, I kept returning to childminding. It offered flexibility, financial stability, and above all, it felt the most rewarding.
When I moved to Wales and had my daughter in 2021, registering with Care Inspectorate Wales felt like a natural step. Although I had been registered with Ofsted since 2013, I had to start the process again. I brought together my experience, qualifications and passion to build the setting I had always dreamed of.
A day in my life
Each day involves meeting children’s physical needs – feeding, nappy changes and keeping them safe. Once those are met, the day flows naturally. I don’t follow a strict routine, though mealtimes tend to be consistent.
Our activities change with the seasons, and we spend a lot of time outdoors. I use the 1000 languages of children Reggio approach to allow children to creatively express themselves in many ways. I promote a calm, unhurried atmosphere where children’s voices are heard. They help choose activities and outings and have access to toys and resources that reflect their interests. This approach helps children feel settled and secure.
A moment I'll always remember
One of my proudest moments was my recent Care Inspector Wales report. To be given ‘Excellent’ in every area was incredible. It was a day of celebration and recognition for the time and care I put into my work. The report is something I’ll always appreciate and feel lucky to have achieved.
Why I love working in care
I feel lucky to love my job. It’s creative, flexible and rewarding. I get to explore beautiful outdoor spaces with the children and watch them grow and develop. Seeing their personalities emerge over time is one of the most fulfilling parts of my role.
What I wish I'd known
When I started, I didn’t realise how close I would become to the families I work with. This isn’t a typical business. You become deeply invested in each child. If you love being around children and want a career that’s meaningful, childminding could be the perfect path.
