The Prince’s Trust partnership programme: young people get bespoke introduction to social care career opportunities
Eleven young people from across Wales have received bespoke introduction to social care training, in our new partnership with The Prince’s Trust.
It’s the first, in what will hopefully be an ongoing series of free training programmes between WeCare Wales and The Prince’s Trust to spark interest in a career in care among the young people The Prince’s Trust works with.
The three-day online programme included workshops about:
- the personal qualities needed to be a social care worker
- duty of care, risk and safeguarding
- confidentiality and consent
- personal resilience and well-being.
The young people also had training from The Prince’s Trust to help them get ‘work ready’, which included preparing for interviews and how to fill out application forms.
The 11 young people who completed the programme were then offered a guaranteed interview with social care providers to help them take their first steps into a career in care.
One of the young people who took part in the training programme said:
“I joined the course to gain experience in adult care… I love that no two days are the same whilst working in the sector and it provides real job satisfaction.”
Another of the young participants said:
“I enjoyed every part of the programme. It was well-rounded and l learned a lot about the different roles, communication, and health and safety.”
Patrick Coombes, Youth Development Lead for The Prince’s Trust, said:
“The course was amazing and from my perspective it was really successful. The comments from the young people echoed that on our feedback forms.”
Following the success of the pilot programme, we will be running another training programme with The Prince’s Trust in the near future.
The programme is based on our existing introduction to social care training.
