Leah’s journey: Life as a Micro-Carer

Micro carer Leah with individual receiving support

Leah’s story is a powerful example of how passion, support, and flexibility can come together to create meaningful change, not just in her own life, but in the lives of those she supports.

With guidance from Heather Maling at Community Catalysts, Leah became a micro-carer, offering personalised support to people with learning disabilities. Working 27 hours a week, she enjoys the freedom of being her own boss and the deep connections she’s built with those she cares for.

Breaking barriers with self-employment

Living with mobility issues, Leah once feared she might not be considered for a role in care. But being self-employed changed everything. She now chooses who she supports based on their needs and what she can offer, creating a tailored and compassionate approach to care.

“People think that care is about washing and dressing, but it’s so much more.”
“You are helping them to reach their fullest potential whilst creating memories and living their best life.”
Leah says

Building relationships

Leah’s consistent presence has brought continuity and trust to the lives of those she supports. She’s seen firsthand how confidence grows when people feel safe and valued. Her favourite part of the job is watching someone blossom.

“Both the relationships and the individuals have flourished,”
Leah says

A day in the life of a Micro-Carer

Leah’s days are filled with joy and adventure. Whether it’s attending ‘Out for An Hour’, an inclusive activity group run by Valleys Connect or enjoying trips to St Fagans, Millennium Centre shows, a shopping trip to Swansea or fish and chips on the beach, every outing is a chance to create lasting memories.

She’s even organised special events, like a surprise birthday meal at the Castle Hotel for Ellie and her friends. Recent plans included a trip to the Royal Welsh Show last month and an upcoming weekend getaway to Weston-super-Mare in November.

From singing at the YMCA in Hirwaun to day coach trips with Brent Thomas, Leah’s work is as vibrant as it is impactful.

Thinking of becoming a Micro-Carer?

Leah’s advice is simple:

“Just do it! There is so much support out there!”
Leah says

With help from Community Catalysts, micro-carers receive training, business setup guidance, and ongoing support. They’re added to RCT’s Micro-Carer Directory, connecting them with people seeking care through local social work teams. A dedicated WhatsApp group also helps carers find work and share advice - this is where Leah found her current role.
