Glennie’s Childminding Service

Childminder Glenys Jones

Hi, I’m Glenys, although most people know me as “Glennie.” I’ve been a registered childminder for 26 years, working from my home in the beautiful coastal village of Aberdyfi, Gwynedd. Nestled between the beach and the mountains, it’s the perfect setting for children to explore, learn, and grow.

My role as a Childminder

I care for babies from three months old up to five years, offering a warm, home-from-home environment where children are truly at the heart of everything we do. Play is child-led and meaningful, and I love encouraging curiosity and learning through everyday experiences.

I’ve built strong, trusting relationships with the families I work with. Parents often come to me for advice, treating me like a wise granny (though I’m still learning every day!). Many of them remain close friends long after their children have moved on.

I’m inspected by Care Inspectorate Wales, and I’m proud to say that my most recent inspection in July resulted in four “Excellent” ratings – a lovely recognition of the care and dedication I put into my work.

How it all started

Before childminding, my husband and I ran a fishmongers business. But my heart was always with children. Even as a child, I was drawn to helping neighbours with their little ones.

Eventually, we sold the business, and I followed my passion. I trained in early years and became a registered childminder, working from home doing what I love. I never imagined it would become my lifelong career, but here I am – 26 years later and still loving every minute.

I’ve always prioritised professional development, attending training courses and completing online learning. I’ve received the Welsh Promise Award through PACEY Cymru, written a case study on the new Welsh curriculum, and contributed to Project Penguin, a pilot scheme supporting children with speech and language needs.

A typical day at Glennie’s

No two days are the same, and that’s the beauty of it. The children lead the way – if dinosaurs are the interest of the day, we bring them out and use natural, open-ended resources to spark imagination and learning.

One of our favourite activities is exploring our “Wicker Basket of the World.” It’s filled with items from different countries – like Welsh dragons, cookbooks, love spoons, and flags. We change the basket every few months and love hunting for new treasures in local charity shops.

We spend lots of time outdoors, walking on the beach or through the woods, building sandcastles, and splashing in puddles. We also attend local groups, sing Welsh songs, visit the library, and enjoy social mealtimes together. There’s always time to rest and recharge too.

A moment I’ll never forget

One of the most touching moments in my career was when a former child I cared for from four months old until she was 11 rang me with exciting news – she was expecting her own baby. She said, “I couldn’t think of anyone else I’d rather send her to.” That little girl started with me, and it was incredibly special to welcome the next generation into my setting.

What I love about my job

Spending time with children of all ages and personalities is a joy. They bring laughter, surprises, and endless energy. I love the freedom to shape each day around their interests – whether it’s going on adventures, meeting friends, or simply making memories.

One of my favourite quotes is:

We didn’t realise we were making memories, we just knew we were having fun
A.A. Milne, the author of Winnie-the-Pooh

One thing I wish I’d known

In the beginning, childminding felt lonely. Working from home without colleagues made it easy to feel isolated. But I quickly realised the importance of getting out into the community – joining groups, meeting other childminders, and attending local events. It helped my mental wellbeing and gave the children valuable opportunities to connect with others.
