Being a Residential Child Care Worker

You’ll provide a kind, caring and fun home for children, helping children and young people thrive. You’ll help them achieve what matters to them and give them a safe and stable home life.

You’ll work as part of a team to provide nurturing and supportive care to young people on a day-to-day basis, helping them to access education and doing everything that is involved in day-to-day home life. This includes celebrating their achievements and doing fun activities, but it also means being there during the difficult times and believing in them, even when they can’t believe in themselves. There will be tough days but this is a rewarding and long term role with career progression opportunities. The role may also require attending meetings with other professionals from education, police and social services as well as working with parents and wider family members.

You can progress to become a Senior Child Care Worker, Deputy Manager or Manager of the residential home.

About the workplace

Residential children’s homes are also known as children’s homes. They’re a place where children and young people can live if they cannot be at home with their own families.
