Welsh Language in social care
Free online training for anybody interested in working in care who wants to learn Welsh language skills.

About the training
This two-hour online training session introduces key Welsh words and phrases for social care, helping you to support Welsh-speaking individuals by enabling basic conversations and understanding their needs. This session is open to everybody, whether you are job seeking, already working in the sector, or are supporting a Welsh-speaking friend or family member. This session is a pilot, and further sessions are dependent on session attendance and feedback.
It will cover:
- what is the Welsh language?
- the importance of the Welsh language in social care in Wales
- the impact of Welsh language provision
- legislation
- learning key Welsh words and phrases for social care
- greetings
- body parts
- feelings
- colours
- food and drink
- social care-based questions and responses
- further learning
You will be sent the presentation slides after completing the session, and we encourage you to use the slides to continue learning and practice your new Welsh knowledge.
When working in the sector, your employer will also provide additional Welsh language training and support.

Right to work
This programme is only open to individuals lawfully resident in Wales at the time of registration.
If you are not a British citizen, you must:
- Be resident in Wales
- Hold a valid visa that grants you the right to work in the UK
When registering, you will be asked to self-certify that you meet these requirements.

Getting into work
This training is not an accredited qualification in health and social care. For more information on sponsorships and working rights please visit www.gov.uk
To work within social care, you will need to have some checks to make sure you are suitable to work in the sector. This will include something called a Disclosure and Barring System (DBS) check to make sure you can work in social care.
Certain roles also require Social Care Wales registration.
