Free online training for people aged 16 years and over living in Wales and interested in working in children’s social care.

About the training

This two-hour online training programme is designed for anyone interested in learning more about children’s social care. Whether you're an unpaid social work assistant, residential childcare worker, support staff, volunteer, or simply exploring a career in the sector.

It will cover:

  • what children’s social care is
  • who it supports and why
  • the aims and values of children’s social care
  • when and how social services may support families
  • what children’s social care looks like in practice
  • what matters to children and families
  • different care settings and roles
  • key responsibilities in the sector
  • the role of the Children’s Commissioner for Wales
  • essential qualities and values for working in care
  • understanding children looked after and care-experienced children and young people
  • relevant legislation and policy
  • opportunities for further learning.

When you begin working in the sector, your employer will also provide additional training and support.

Right to work

This programme is only open to individuals lawfully resident in Wales at the time of registration.
If you are not a British citizen, you must:

  • Be resident in Wales
  • Hold a valid visa that grants you the right to work in the UK

Getting into work

This training is not an accredited qualification in health and social care.

To work in children’s social care, you’ll need to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check to ensure you’re suitable to work in the sector. Some roles may also require registration with Social Care Wales.
