I wanted to volunteer because when I was visiting my father here,
2
00:00:09 - 00:00:11
I saw the amount of tasks that the caretaker Paul had to take on.
3
00:00:12 – 00:00:14
So I spoke to Claire and Paul and saw if they would be happy
4
00:00:15 - 00:00:21
with me bringing a team of staff from EE along to do some of the jobs which kind of needed to be done.
5
00:00:22 - 00:00:27
We've been here four or five times bringing teams to do volunteer work
and give something back to the community.
6
00:00:28 - 00:00:30
When Mark approached me with the idea of them coming to volunteer in the home,
7
00:00:31 - 00:00:37
I thought "absolutely amazing and how wonderful"
and straight away then I went about making it happen.
8
00:00:38 - 00:00:41
So, the volunteers have actually transformed our patio area.
9
00:00:42 - 00:00:48
It looks outstanding and the residents often comment
on how beautiful the flowers are out there now.
10
00:00:49 - 00:00:56
It's also a far more welcoming space for when we have visitors,
relatives, families come and sit with the residents.
11
00:00:57 - 00:01:06
So we do many jobs here, painting, gardening, sweeping, cleaning tiles,
shifting rubbish, picking up leaves, trimming bushes.
12
00:01:07 - 00:01:08
There is nothing that we won't do.
13
00:01:09 - 00:01:14
It's great for our mental health and well-being
and it's nice to just spend time together outside of the office environment.
14
00:01:15 - 00:01:22
Getting to know one another which can only then be good for us as a team
and us as an organisation and then ultimately our customers as well.
15
00:01:23 - 00:01:29
It's great being here knowing that I've contributed to making the home
look a bit nicer, the residents can appreciate it, the staff as well.
16
00:01:30 - 00:01:35
And it meant the world to me to see my dad sat out in the garden,
something which he wouldn't normally do
17
00:01:36 - 00:01:42
and enjoying the flowers, the scenery and the painting
and just being able to relax and take in the fresh air.
18
00:01:43 - 00:01:50
So I've learned that it doesn't take much to give something back
and it doesn't matter what your physical capabilities,
19
00:01:51 -v00:01:58
picking up some leaves or painting one panel of a fence,
even if it's just making tea, it can help you feel good
20
00:01:59 - 00:02-02
and it has such a difference on the residents and it could change your life.
21
00:02:03 - 00:02:09
So if you're a manager, I would encourage you
to look out for volunteers because it may not be as difficult as you think.
22
00:02:10 - 00:02:14
This has taken a small amount of effort with a lot to gain from it.
23
00:02:15 - 00:02:21
You can liaise with your local community,
look to see what volunteer groups are available in your area,
24
00:02:22 - 00:02:24
reach out and make it happen.
