Home Care Services

As our population ages, home care is becoming essential to people across Wales. But what exactly is home care and why is it so important? We run through what home care involves and give advice on how to find a provider near you. We also have some insight into what working in the field is like, along with some links to help you find home care jobs.

What is Home Care?

Home care is also known as domiciliary care. These services provide essential care and support for people who live in their own homes.  This support is built around people’s needs and routines to helps them remain in their home in a safe and supported way.

A home carer will provide various services for the people they care for. This includes helping with personal care, such as washing and dressing. They may also help around the house with tasks such as cleaning and laundry. Additionally, they could help by cooking in the home or delivering meals, as well as carrying out miscellaneous tasks like filling out forms and paying bills on time. Some health care services can be carried out in the home, where appropriate.

Helping people stay connected with their communities is one of the most important aspects of this service. As home care enables people to keep doing the things that matter most to them while staying connected to their friends and families, more and more people are choosing to use home care services to get the care they need.

Finding Home Care Services

Home care services provide professional, qualified staff to carry out home visits across Wales. These services are suitable for all sorts of people, such as older people, people with severe illnesses, people recovering from surgery, or people with disabilities. This service can be viewed as an alternative to that of care homes, and though they are similar in how they support people to live their life in the way they want, the day-to-night care model provided by care homes may be more suitable. You can find out more about care homes at our dedicated information page.

If you’re not sure where to start in your search for the right provider, our database of home care service providers throughout Wales can help. You can filter the results to find services near you, find out more information about them on their websites and get in touch with them to make sure they can match your needs.

Who Regulates Home Care Services?

Home care/domiciliary care service providers are regulated in Wales by Care Inspectorate Wales under the Regulation and Inspection of Social Care (Wales) Act 2016 which came into force on April 2, 2018. For more information, please visit the Care Inspectorate Wales website.

All managers and workers who provide Home Care Services are registered with Social Care Wales. You can apply to register or search the register online at the Social Care Wales website.
